Private school admissions: a month-by-month timeline
Updated October 14, 2026
Many private schools, especially independent and high schools, follow a similar yearly calendar for the next school year. Parish and smaller schools often accept students all year, so if you're late, still call.
Late summer to fall: research and visit
- Make a short list with our search.
- Go to open houses (most are in October and November) and book tours and shadow days.
Late fall to winter: apply
- Many application deadlines fall between December and February.
- Entrance tests, interviews and teacher recommendations usually happen now.
- Financial aid applications are often due at the same time as the admission application.
- Check when your state's ESA, voucher or scholarship applications open; some open in winter or early spring.
Early spring: decisions
- Many schools send decisions in March, with a reply date a few weeks later.
- Compare aid offers and the real cost before you sign an enrollment contract.
Spring and summer: get ready
- Pay the deposit, order uniforms and books, and finish any state program paperwork.
Dates differ by school, so confirm each school's calendar.
